Captain Red Eye

I don't know why, but I am prone to getting an allergic reaction in my left eye. It swells and itches. I've had this happen 3 or 4 times in my life which I'd assume is already above the norm.

P.S. don't urban dictionary captain red eye like I just did.

I've had this sitting in my studio for a few months so very close to being finished. While i was waiting for glue to dry on a seperate painting i decided to just cross it off the check list.

acrylic, colored pencil, birch veneer cutouts on wood and paper; 9"x 12".

This is the painting that I was letting dry. If I owned an Iron I wouldn't have to glue the veneer, I'd just adhere it with heat... But I wear wrinkled shirts.

This is a long over due addition to the book I'm re-illustrating. The accompanying story focuses on a goal the author had, and how he accomplished it terrible weather or not.
This itself is awakening for me. I need to continue to pump out material even after the 40 hour week. Because come on... it's not that hard.

At one point I responded to an ad for free books. It was posted by an elderly lady who had to move, and part with a huge collection of art books and historical literature. I helped her pack up her collection. She let me go through it, and in return i got to keep a great deal of very nice books. I leave them on a shelf next to my desk and go through them from time to time for inspiration. I found this small paperback the other day.

The new gold rush, natural gas drilling, is coming to your back yard soon. For Pennsylvania its a surge of income for some struggling communities but the ambush doesn't allow for too much rational thought. Just remember folks, fracking has its negative effects too.

"Lady of the Sea"

I did this painting awhile ago, along with several others revolving around the sea. I've been putting off scanning them because i haven't figured a way to show the reflective shine on parts of the painting. The figure and water are supposed to glimmer. oh well, i got bored this morning and decided to scan a couple in anyways. here is the first one.

Obama's America

There was, to date, a cap of 75 million dollars which an oil company had to pay for damages and reconstruction of a single oil spill. Obama has since designated it his duty to make BP create an escrow account of $20 Billion. Holding companies responsible for their actions is such a refreshing thought.

We all know the story. No one is happy about it.
Although, the last major oil spill by BP (2006/2007, Alaska's Prudhoe Bay) the company changed its logo to convince people of its changing "green" policies. I wonder what they will come up with this time.

Blogging is Hard

With out any excuses, blogging is hard. Or should i say, "blogging regularly."

After reviewing my project revolving around William Kurelek's book Lumberjack. I realized i need to do a much larger edit than I anticipated. This also gave me the chance to look at my illustrations thus far and realize that they have gotten away from me. Actually they got away from each other, they were not relating as one story. So I quickly tidied them up and hopefully, we are now on our way.

I also have some paintings that I need to upload, but I am having trouble translating the high gloss paint on to a computer screen. Minor difficulties that I'll resolve soon.

I wont go into this illustration much so that it will not become a biased argument. I will simply say that it is about changing religious principles to adapt to modern times.
(I am not condoning or condemning either side.)

I also want to mention that I have been behind my due dates, obviously. I started this a couple months ago in order to get back on track and refocus my energy. I expected a little adjustment time but hopefully this will help me to get that much closer to my ideal "artistic regiment." The paintings are coming along slower than expected, I switched back to oil paint and I'm trying to give them the time to mature the way they should. I might need to change my painting due date to a bi-monthly situation.

The third story found in Lumberjack by William Kurelek sets up the beginning of a normal work day. Starting with, what I can only relate to as a mess hall from my summer camp days. All the laborers collect at a given hour and eat healthy portions of breakfast foods. The author mentions that the amount of work done requires 3X as much food as he is used to eating and the cooks are happy to supply.

Cook Vs Bear

"Cook Vs Bear" came from the second story in Lumberjack by William Kurelek. It starts to set up the camp and camp life once in the brush. The quantity of hungry men required a full time cook on duty. But because there was so many to feed they needed large amounts of foods which resulted in a mass of waste products (empty lard and bean cans, butcher waste, compost.) Continuing the cause and effects, bears and seagulls would stalk the compost areas and disturb camp.

Monthly Illustration: August

America's favorite past time received some history this past month. I figured I'd try my hand at a sports illustration in the spirit of the PERFECT GAME pitched by White Sox's starter, Mark Buehrle. I wanted to show the history behind one of the hardest achievements in baseball, (only 16 occurrences since 1900) so i paired him with the first pitcher of the modern era to do the same, Cy Young.

Arriving at Camp

"Arriving at Camp" is the first short story/memory shared in the body of the book Lumberjack. It describes his first ventures into the bush and the treturous terrain they would have to overcome with just a wood sled and Caterpillar tractor. I tried to take the opportunity to play up the enviroment, which corrisponds to his emotions of first entering this vast unknown habitat.
I didn't produce this for the due date, 8/15. So expect another one for that date.

Lumberjack By William Kurelek

My mom was clearing out some books from the library in anticipation of incoming recent purchases and found this gem of a book. Being a good mother she sent it to me. I have this odd obsession with felling trees so it has been some good inspiration as of late. This is good news because I've been trying to stay focused, and driven. What a perfect opportunity to combine two interests and add another personal project.

Personal Assignment:
Re-Illustrate the Stories of Lumberjack by William Kurelek.
One illustration for each story due the 15th of every month.
25 stories, an epilogue, and jacket design/illustration

(Towards the end of the process I'll have to decide if i want to build the book for a show piece)
